Customs clearance of electric cars

The issue of customs clearance of electric cars is more than relevant today. The reason is very simple. The number of those who prefer electric cars has increased among Armenian drivers. One of the main reasons for this is that electric cars are powered by electricity, not fuel.

Only in the first quarter of this year, 414 electric vehicles were imported to Armenia, last year - 1894. These machines are imported to Armenia mainly from China, the USA, Japan, the UAE, neighbouring Georgia.

Customs clearance of electric cars in Armenia is carried out at the customs clearance centre of the Northern Customs Administration - in Gyumri.

Unlike many other imported goods, customs clearance of electric cars has advantages.

According to the government's decision, which came into force on April 16, the import of vehicles with an electric motor is duty-free. A tariff quota for customs clearance of up to 6,400 electric cars has been established. This privilege will be valid until December 31, 2023. At the same time, a benefit for 8000 electric cars will be provided next year.

Previously, from January 1, 2021, a 15 percent customs duty rate was applied:

After the amount of the quota receiving the benefit has been exhausted, the customs authority can no longer provide this tariff benefit. The benefit can be applied only if the cars has already crossed the border of the Republic of Armenia and the importer has submitted the relevant declaration to the customs authority. At the same time, in the case of registered commodity declarations, the benefit will be applied to a vehicle that has previously crossed the customs border of the Republic of Armenia.

This decision of the Government is retroactive. The state will return the customs duty to individuals after January 1, 2022, and to legal entities after March 28.

During the customs clearance of electric cars, VAT benefits also apply.

On December 10, 2021, the National Assembly adopted the Law "On Amendments to the Tax Code of the Republic of Armenia". According to it, the term of the value-added tax relief in terms of the import and (or) alienation of cars with an electric motor (large, medium and small buses, passenger cars, motorcycles and mopeds) has been extended until January 1, 2024.
