What is a bill of lading

What is the transport bill of lading or the more popular CMR and why is it necessary when carrying out cargo transportation? First, the transportation contract is confirmed by drawing up a bill of lading. The transport bill of lading is the main accounting document for the movement of cargo, on the basis of which the shipper writes off the cargo, and the consignee enters it. The transport bill of lading is drawn up by the carrier.

The drawing up of a transport bill of lading is applied to any contract relating to road transportation of goods by hired means of transport, when the place of receipt of goods and the place of delivery of goods specified in the agreement are located in the territories of two different countries.

A transport bill of lading is required everywhere, it is drawn up in accordance with the Convention on the Contract for the International Carriage of Goods by Road.
This document has mandatory fields:

.date and place of drawing up the bill of lading,
.name and address of the sender,
.name and address of the carrier,
.the place, date and destination of delivery of the cargo,
.name and address of the recipient,
• the usual description of the cargo and the type of packaging and, in the case of dangerous goods, their accepted description,
• the number of bundles and their special symbols and numbers,
.the gross weight or otherwise expressed quantity of the cargo,
.payments related to transportation (transportation payments, additional fees, customs duties, as well as other fees charged from the moment of signing the contract to the delivery of the cargo);
• instructions required for customs or other formalities.

If necessary, the bill of lading should also contain the following data:

a) statement on the inadmissibility of re-loading,
b) the fees that the sender is obliged to pay,
c) amount of money "paid at the time of delivery",
d) the declared value of the cargo and the amount of special interest at the time of delivery,
e) the sender's instructions to the carrier regarding cargo insurance,
f) the agreed period during which the transportation must be carried out,
g) the list of documents handed over to the carrier.

The bill of lading is usually drawn up in three copies. The first copy is given to the sender, the second copy accompanies the cargo, and the third is retained by the carrier.
